How does Propecia work and what pharmaceutical group does it belong to?

Therapeutic effect of Propecia(finasteride) is associated with blocking the conversion of testosterone into DHT( dihydrotestosterone) and thus lowers the amount of dihydrotestosterone in the organism. It's considered that DHT is responsible for the developing of male baldness. By decreasing the DHT levels, Propecia helps to stop hair loss. Propecia works only in men and is not approved alopecia in women and children.

What should a patient know prior to taking the medication?

Propecia should not be taken:

  • in known hypersensitivity or allergy to any of the medication ingredients.
  • liver diseases
  • in women and children
  • Propecia should be used with caution in prostate gland disease

Which adverse effects may manifest when using the medication?

The most common propecia side effects include: erectile dysfunction, decreased libido, decreased ejaculate amount. In rare cases Propecia may cause acne, weight gain and depression.

It is not necessary that the side effects will manifest in an individual but the possibility still exist. For more information please consult your health care provider.

Which groups of drugs or specific preparations may interact with Propecia?

The drug is affected by the following:

  • Drugs used in prostate gland disease treatment

Tell your doctor about all the herbal preparations as well as prescription drugs that you are currently taking even if they are not on the list.

Propecia is supplied for individual use. Do not use it to treat other conditions not listed in the leaflet. Keep the product out of children reach. Do not reuse any disposable materials if supplied with the preparation.
